De-amalgamation Engagement Moves to Next Phase

Snowy Valleys Council is continuing to progress its de-amalgamation program, 
with the establishment of a Community Panel marking the next opportunity for 
residents to help shape the future of local government in the region.

Expressions of Interest are now open for a 20-member De-amalgamation 
Community Panel, which will provide community input, local knowledge and 
feedback to support Council's decision-making throughout the transition period.
Council is seeking ten representatives from the northern area (former Tumut Shire) 
and ten representatives from the southern area (former Tumbarumba Shire), with 
membership to reflect the diversity of the Snowy Valleys community, including a 
range of ages, backgrounds, interests and lived experiences.

Chief Transition Officer Nicole Jenkins said the Community Panel would 
complement other governance and engagement activities already underway.
"De-amalgamation is a complex process that will influence the future services and 
identity of our communities for many years to come," Ms Jenkins said.
"We are keen to hear from people who are passionate about the Snowy Valleys 
and who can contribute local knowledge, diverse perspectives and constructive 
ideas to help inform the transition process."

Ms Jenkins said panel members will participate in forums, workshops and briefing 
sessions and provide feedback on matters such as service delivery priorities, 
financial sustainability, asset management and community identity.
Participation is voluntary, with members expected to attend approximately six to 
eight sessions over the life of the project.

The Community Panel announcement follows the recent closure of Expressions of 
Interest for the De-amalgamation Steering Committee, which attracted nine 
applications – four from the northern area and five from the southern area. To
enable the Steering Committee to be established as soon as possible, Councillors
will consider the applications at an Extraordinary Meeting on 2 July 2026.

A survey seeking community feedback on the potential future use of the existing 
Snowy Valleys Council brand was also recently concluded. A total of 364 
responses were received, with 281 respondents supporting the retention of the 
brand for one of the future councils. A report on the survey findings will be 
presented to a future Council meeting for consideration.

Residents interested in joining the Community Panel are invited to complete an 
Expression of Interest form and provide a brief statement outlining their interest, 
experience and connection to the Snowy Valleys community.
Applications close at 11.59pm on Sunday, 19 July 2026.
